2-Piece Induction Heat Seal (IHS)

Two layers of protection: a bonded seal for the journey, and a backing wad that reseals the cap after.
2-Piece Induction Heat Seal (IHS)

Overview

What it is, and what it’s for.

The 2-piece induction heat seal has two components: a foil seal and a separate backing wad. The foil bonds to the container rim during induction sealing and is removed on first opening; the backing wad stays inside the cap and continues to seal the container each time it is closed.

That gives tamper evidence up to first opening and a working reseal afterwards — which suits containers that are opened and closed many times over the life of the product. A vented configuration is available for products that build pressure.

How It Works

How induction sealing works.

Induction sealing is non-contact: the liner is heated through the closure, so the cap stays on while the seal is made.

Read the sealing FAQs
  1. STEP 01

The liner is fitted inside the cap, and the cap is applied to the filled container.

  2. STEP 02

The capped container passes under an induction sealing head, which produces an electromagnetic field.

  3. STEP 03

The field heats the liner's foil layer, melting its sealing layer onto the container rim.

  4. STEP 04

As it cools, the liner bonds to the rim — closing off the opening itself, not just the cap.

When to Choose It

Is it right for your pack?

  • You need tamper evidence and a reseal after first opening.
  • The container is opened and closed repeatedly.
  • You may need a vented option for a product that builds pressure.

What is the difference between a 1-piece and a 2-piece induction seal?

A 1-piece seal is a single liner that bonds to the container and comes away completely when opened, leaving nothing in the cap. A 2-piece seal adds a separate backing wad that stays inside the cap after the foil seal is removed, so the cap still seals the container when it is closed again. Choose 1-piece when the product does not need resealing; choose 2-piece when the container is opened and closed repeatedly.

What stays in the cap after a 2-piece seal is opened?

The backing wad. The foil seal comes away on first opening, and the wad remains in the cap so it continues to seal the container whenever it is closed.

Can a 2-piece induction seal be vented?

Yes, venting is available. If your product releases gas or builds pressure, see the Two Piece Induction Vented Seal.
